What spices and seasonings are safe for dogs

Most spices and seasonings used in human cooking are not safe for pets. The best seasonings for pets are natural, unprocessed, and organic.

Some safe options include fresh herbs like parsley, basil, oregano, and thyme. You can also try adding a pinch of turmeric or cinnamon to your pet's food. Be sure to consult with your veterinarian before adding any new seasonings to your pet's diet.

What seasonings are NOT safe for pets

Generally, it is not safe to give any seasonings to pets.

Garlic and onion powder, as well as onion and garlic flakes, are especially harmful.

Animal experts advise against giving any seasonings, herbs, or spices to pets, as they can cause stomach irritation, gastric distress, or even toxicity.

If you would like to add flavor to your pet's food, try making homemade pet-safe treats with fish, vegetables, and other natural ingredients or use the pet food seasonings that carry the quality seal of the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) as mentioned in our earlier blog.
